One Head at a time
“It’s sometimes the simple things that make all the difference. Since founding the charity I’ve always tried to ensure that our services and literature supported a wide range of hair types and ethnicities but I knew deep down that there was still a lot of work to be done.
So over the last few years, along with my dedicated team we have had deeply moving conversations during interviews with over 200 people from a mixture of communities and with varying hair textures. As we sat together and reflected on the hospital experience, we noticed that the mannequin heads used to display head scarves and wigs were nearly always white and it was time for change.
The result is our new One Head campaign that we feel is just one small way that we are working to help individuals within our diverse community to feel included during hair loss.
It really is a great privilege to see this campaign come to fruition as it encapsulates our charity’s vital work. I can still visualise every single woman of colour who courageously shared their cancer hair loss experience with me.
I’m delighted to say that since launching the campaign in March 2019 lot’s of hospitals and cancer support centres have jumped on board displaying one of our free ‘Diversity Display Packs’ containing a darker skin coloured mannequin head.
We hope that our #OneHead campaign will help to create positive and inclusive change for many years to come”
