Our collaboration with Schwarzkopf LIVE UK features Julie’s vibrant red hair and what it means to her identity and self-expression. Here is her personal cancer treatment-related hair loss experience. You can watch her inspiring video on YouTube.
Featured in the ‘Hair Me Out’ by Refinery29, Julie gets a haircut from Cancer Hair Care founder Jasmin to remove the last of her post-cancer treatment ‘chemo curls’. Long, red hair has been a huge part of Julie’s identity for decades. So losing her hair during chemo treatment for breast cancer felt like having an important part of herself “stripped away.” Fortunately, Julie was supported throughout her treatment by the Cancer Hair Care charity. From scalp cooling to minimise hair loss, to transformational hair cuts, and her first root touch up post-treatment, Cancer Hair Care has been there every step of the way.
Here’s what Julie had to say:
“Cancer Hair Care means a great deal to me as I was supported by the charity throughout my treatment, into recovery and my new hair growth. At each stage of my experience, they gave me confidence and this permeated my entire hair loss journey and how I faced the world.
“When I received my breast cancer diagnosis, it was both daunting and overwhelming to consider potential hair loss. My long, thick red hair was always such a big part of my identity.
“After my first consultation at Cancer Hair Care, I felt really special. They really listened to me and I walked away from my first visit with a bag full of goodies and lots of expert, kind advice. To have a charity that was so compassionate, understanding and informed about all aspects of hair loss was incredibly special.
“I decided to try and minimise my hair loss through Scalp Cooling. Cancer Hair Care introduced this to me and had lots of great advice about how to prepare for each session and what to expect. They gave me a simple, fabric hairband to protect my forehead from the cold – although a tissue works too!
“Some of my hair started falling out after my third chemo cycle. I had a pre-booked consultation at the Caring Hair Salon and I made the decision to cut my hair into a bobbed style, which would make it look neater and thicker.
“I’m honoured to be a Trustee of Cancer Hair Care and I’m so proud of the charity’s growth, with exciting partnerships like Schwarzkopf LIVE UK. It’s great to see a huge hair brand care so deeply about helping to empower people when they are facing such cancer and hair loss challenges. Together, we are making hair loss one less worry.”
