Wigs
The Cancer Hair Care ‘Head’s Up’ service is here to support you if you choose to obtain a wig. It’s important for us to point out that the ‘Head’s Up’ service does not provide the NHS wig supply service. To obtain a free wig using the NHS Wales – Wig Supplier Services please see below.
The Cancer Hair Care Head’s Up team can help with:
- Explaining your choices in obtaining a wig including NHS wig supply, private suppliers and wig bank options
- Sign post you to the process of obtaining a wig using the recommended NHS Wales suppliers
- Help you to find a wig supplier who is local to you
- Provide you with tips and ideas around wig choices, fitting and styling
- Provide you with the Cancer Hair Care ‘Wig Bank Plus’ service
- Provide alternative options to a wig
We highly recommend that the best option for obtaining a wig is for you to access the NHS Wales – Wig Supplier Services which are commissioned as part of the NHS Hywel Dda University Health Board’s commitment to patient support.
By accessing this service you will be provided a choice of brand new wigs in a hair texture, colour and style to best meet your individual requirements. You will not pay for the wig if you choose one from within the pre-set budget.
How to obtain a wig using the NHS Wales – Wig Supplier Services
There are a number of wig suppliers/salons who have a contract to supply wigs on behalf of the NHS Hywel Dda University Health Board.
- Please ask your cancer nurse for a wig voucher/referral and a copy of the ‘NHS Wales Contract for the Provision and Fitting of Wigs Patient Information Booklet’.
- The above patient booklet has a list and map of the NHS wig suppliers/salons, as well as helpful further information
- Wigs are supplied free of charge in Wales by accessing your local NHS wig provider service
- The NHS wig provider will offer you a wig from within a range and budget that has been pre-set by your hospital clinic
- If you choose a wig that is within the pre-set budget you will not pay for either the wig or the fitting service. If you decide to purchase a higher specification wig, then any additional cost would need to be met by you and payable at the time of your wig consultation/fitting.
Other wig options:
Private suppliers
If you are happy to cover the cost of a wig in full, there are a number of private wig suppliers in Wales and available online. You may like to browse the Cancer Hair Care Directory to look for online suppliers.
VAT
If you are making a personal contribution towards your wig or buying a wig from a private supplier, you can claim the VAT back on this purchase (currently at 20%). For further information about how to go about this please visit the HMRC website and ensure you take along the completed form to your wig consultation appointment.
Wig Banks
Cancer Hair Care (as well as other organisations) offers a Wig Bank Plus service whereby pre-loved wigs are donated, washed and re-distributed free of charge. Please contact us to find out more.
