In particular, we were pleased to see the introduction of a Personal Cancer Plan with bespoke assessments, including better support for the side effects of treatment, such as hair loss.

Through our strong partnerships with cancer care co-ordinators, we understand the huge impact personalised care has on a cancer patient navigating their hair loss during treatment.

As a charity, we are deeply committed to filling gaps in patient care. While the new plan doesn’t explicitly address the existing wig access inequities across England, we will continue to strive towards more inclusion and diversity for all cancer patients, wherever they live.

For the first time, England’s Plan also includes a chapter for children and young adults which underlines their unique needs. This is a vital addition and we will continue to work together with Great Ormond Street, UCLH and Teenage Cancer Trust to support the hair loss challenges that young people with cancer face.

Cath and Emma are Cancer Hair Care specially trained hairdressers part of a large team in Wales who support patients across the Hywel Dda University Health Board who is the first Health Board in Wales to provide a comprehensive support service for chemotherapy-related hair loss. 

Heads Up has been funded by Hywel Dda Health Charities (Carms and Ceredigion), the official charity of Hywel Dda University Health Board, and the Withybush Hospital Cancer Day Unit Appeal (Pembs) since Jan 2024.

The initiative has been made possible thanks to the generosity of local communities.

Further funding has just been announced by Hywel Dda Health Charities and the Withybush Hospital Cancer Day Unit Appeal for the next two years (2026-27).

Hair loss can be one of the most distressing side effects of cancer treatment, and this service helps patients feel heard, supported and equipped with practical tools and advice.

It offers tailored support for every stage of the hair loss journey, including headwear options, brow and lash care, and guidance on new hair growth.

The service also provides training for nurses and local hairdressers, helping to build a community of informed professionals who can offer evidence-based support.

Our Afro Hair Chemotherapy Guide is a global first. It is a step towards making sure that people of colour have the specific information they need.

One Head campaign

As part of our unique ‘One Head’ campaign we successfully delivered ‘Diversity Display Packs’ containing a darker skin coloured mannequin head and cultural headwear to UK hospitals, oncology units and cancer support centres to embrace diversity.

Modest headwear

We have been busy working with women from various communities who wear ‘modest’ headwear as part of their cultural or faith commitments, to create items that are suitable for hair loss wearers including hijabs for hair loss and easy tie scarves in ethnic styles and patterns.

Speaking about Cancer Hair Care being chosen to attend the reception in recognition of Cancer Hair Care’s community-based cancer support,

Cancer Hair Care Charity Founder – Hair Expert Jasmin said: 

“Attending the palace reception on behalf of our team is a huge privilege and a day that we will never forget. I had the opportunity to speak with both the King and Queen. His Majesty The King was thrilled to learn all about our hair loss dolls, knitted by volunteers, that help children to understand hair loss. He was fascinated about how these dolls turn inside out revealing hair on one side and hair free on the other. He smiled with joy when I tried to recruit him as a volunteer knitter. 

We spent time discussing holistic needs of cancer patients with hair loss and how our volunteer hairdressers from around the UK support patients. The King was delighted to elevate our charity by highlighting the importance of services like Cancer Hair Care. He was warm, kind and full of enthusiasm for how we can all work together to alleviate suffering during cancer treatment.”

“I was also very fortunate to also meet and chat with Her Majesty The Queen. Her Majesty wanted to know all about our Wig Bank service and how we work with hairdressers to provide hair cutting and other support. We talked about our services for adults and children as well as the NHS nurse education we provide“.

As well as training hairdressers with the ‘Foundation in Cancer Treatment Related Hair Loss’ course, Jasmin Julia Gupta is the only hairdresser in the UK to become an NHS nurse educator.

Jasmin was accompanied by three of her charity’s very deserving team – Corrina; Marc and Margherita – to meet Their Majesties King Charles and Queen Camilla at Buckingham Palace.

One such guest was originally a patient herself using the charity’s services – As Cancer Hair Care’s Information Specialist, 

Corrina said: “Cancer Hair Care supported me all the way through my hair loss including my first hair cuts and colours. Now, I support others during their time of need. What a huge privilege it was to be a part of The King’s reception at Buckingham Palace. I love my role at the charity and take great care to do my best when communicating with people during their chemo and hair loss. I know myself, having had cancer and hair loss, just how important those kind touches are.” 

As Cancer Hair Care’s Information Specialist, Corrina started her chemotherapy treatment hair loss journey with Cancer Hair Care back in 2011 when she met our charity founder Jasmin at one of the charity’s clinics at the Lister Hospital in Stevenage. Following her treatment, Corrina kept in touch and then Jasmin asked if she would like to join the charity. Corrina jumped at the opportunity and has spent the last 14 years building up her knowledge to become an Information Specialist. Corrina facilitates thousands of services a year. From booking people into our hospital clinics, sending hair loss dolls across the UK, liaising with our hairdressing team and co-ordinating our free resources parcels.

Jasmin says “Corrina has such natural empathy and kindness for every person she supports. She has grown from being a beneficiary to becoming our Information Specialist. Corrina is the person who joins everything together at our charity so that our patients get the very best support available. What a pleasure it was to go to meet Their Majesties The King and Queen with Corrina – hers is an inspiring journey from patient to palace.”

Also invited to the palace were Marc and Margherita. Jasmin explained: “Margherita and Marc were the first two volunteers for Cancer Hair Care. They have been there come rain or shine with a clear goal to serve the cancer community. It takes many compassionate people to drive a charity. Attending the palace reception with Margherita, Marc and Corrina, on behalf of all of our team, is a huge honour.”

On behalf of all our volunteer hairdressers and team, we are truly honoured to be a part of His Majesty The King’s message of hope for cancer patients.

The Level 3 students, who are currently in Year 11, have been washing pre-loved wigs for
Cancer Hair Care’s Wig Bank as part of its ‘Head’s Up’ service to patients from the Hywel
Dda University Health Board (Wales).

The students were taught how to wash wigs by Cancer Hair Care Volunteer Hairdresser
Emma Williams, who is a Hairdressing Level 3 Course Tutor as well as being a member of
the charity’s team.

Emma said: “Im so proud of our learners. They put such care and effort to ensure each wig
was ready for a new person. This experience also helps them to develop valuable skills for
the future.”

The refreshed wigs will now be distributed to patients attending the Heads Up; service at
Withybush Hospital; Glangwili Hospital; Prince Philip Hospital and Bronglais Hospital.

Jasmin Julia Gupta, founder of Cancer Hair Care, added: “A huge Thank You to the students
for all their efforts. Its great to see the hairdressers of the future learning about cancer and
hair loss as well as serving their local community. Patients will feel so cared for when they
discover that their Wig Bank wig has been carefully hand-washed by these kind students.”

“For anybody going through the agony of losing your hair I thought I would share with you my personal journey. I have been a nurse for over 40 years and the last 20 I have spent in

senior executive positions. 

I have never been daunted in taking difficult decisions, but faced with managing the loss of my hair due to chemo was going to be the greatest challenge I have faced. Early planning for me was essential, I was put in touch with the charity Cancer Hair Care, who have just been fabulous.

A message to all health care professionals, hair loss as part of some chemotherapies is a given, however every patient will deal with this side effect in many different ways. Together we provide specialist services by our expert hairdressers. Our services are inclusive of all hair textures, cultural needs, individual circumstances and span from young women with breast cancer to older women. Everyone is made to feel welcome.

We are the only charity who also educates NHS breast cancer nurses with our foundation courses for health care professionals. Often a nurse is the person to direct someone to our charity:
